Boston mayor: Bus driver strike 'illegal'

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Boston Mayor Tom Menino emphasized that a wildcat strike by most of the city's school bus drivers is illegal and says he will meet with the city's legal team to resolve it.

Menino said at a news conference Tuesday that the strike was brought on by drivers who "agreed to a contract and now ... don't want to live up to that contract."

He called the strike that stranded most of the city's 33,000 schoolchildren "totally unnecessary."

The school department says about 600 of the 700 unionized drivers who work for the department's bus contractor are on strike and just 30 of 650 school buses are on the road.

Superintendent John McDonough says the strike will be resolved by whatever means available.

Union leadership has not commented.

Schools remain open.
