A North Greenville University student's body was found by his girlfriend at Wildcat Falls in Greenville County on Thursday night.

Lt. Tim Ridgeway, with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, said the man's girlfriend said the man went hiking by himself and he was found floating face down in the water around 7 p.m.

The man's girlfriend called authorities after looking for him all afternoon, Ridgeway said.

Coroner Parks Evans identified the man as 20-year-old Brent Elrod, of Piedmont. He said Elrod was an avid hiker and was trying to climb the waterfall but lost his footing and fell.

Deputies said Elrod was a college student in the Upstate and FOX Carolina has learned he attended North Greenville University.

The university posted the following statement on their Facebook page Friday morning:

"Please pray for our campus. A dear student, Brent Elrod, passed away yesterday. He was very influential here and in his community. We are filled with sorrow, but have no doubt that Brent is in Heaven because of how he lived his life. Please lift up the Elrod family and Brent's sweet girlfriend in your prayers. Thank you for your continued support."

University President Dr. Jimmy Epting also released a statement and said Elrod, "Enjoyed the outdoors, was a Student Services Coordinator, and special to us all. We would appreciate your prayers for the Elrods and the NGU family during this difficult time."

Elrod was a Christian Studies major preparing to go into the ministry, according to a NGU spokesperson.

Elrod said the cause of death was drowning and the manner of death is ruled accidental.
