SC pension board exec says treasurer bullied him

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

The chief operating officer for the agency that invests pension money for South Carolina workers is resigning, saying he can't stand being bullied by state Treasurer Curtis Loftis.

Darry Oliver's retirement was announced Friday at a Retirement System Investment Commission special meeting. Board Chairman Reynolds Williams says Oliver decided to quit Sept. 30, after Lofits went on a tirade using foul language.

In a statement after the meeting, Loftis denied Oliver's version of the call and says he was threatened.

Loftis is a member of the board, which makes investments for the state's $27 billion pension portfolio. He asked to discuss the report behind closed doors but left the meeting angrily after that motion failed.

The board picked former State Sen. Greg Ryberg to be its new chief operating officer.
