GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A man has been charged after attempting to hit his girlfriend but accidentally hitting their 2-year-old child, according to Greenwood County deputies.

On Oct. 6 deputies were called to an area hospital by staff on reports of a child assault.

The deputy's report said when they arrived they spoke to the child's mother, who said she was visiting the child's father, Kelvin Martin, 31, when they got into a fight.

The woman told deputies Martin swung at the her face but missed, accidentally hitting the young child in her arms, according to the report.

Deputies said the woman stated Martin was not aware that he hit the child and did not intentionally do so.

Deputies said they evaluated the child's injuries and found no signs of assault besides vomit near the child's mouth.

The sheriff's office said Martin was charged with criminal domestic violence and child abuse.
