CHARLESTON, SC (AP) -

A retired Charleston developer says he will seek the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.

Sixty-three-year-old Pat McKinney announced Monday that he will seek the state's number two post and would work closely with Gov. Nikki Haley.

Republican Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell of Charleston has not yet announced if he will seek election next year. McConnell became lieutenant governor last year after Lt. Gov. Ken Ard resigned and pleaded guilty to ethics violations.

McKinney said he wants to focus on economic development.

The lieutenant governor's official duties include presiding over the South Carolina Senate and supervising the South Carolina office on aging.

State Rep. Bakari Sellers of Denmark has announced that he is seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor next year.
