PHOENIX (AP) -

Dave McGary, an artist who was known for bringing a sense of realism to his bronze sculptures of Native Americans and life in the West, has died. He was 55.

Molly McGary, his wife, said Wednesday that he passed away last Friday at the couple's home in Paradise Valley after battling a rare form of kidney cancer.

McGary, who had galleries in Scottsdale and Ruidoso, NM, was lauded for portraying Native American figures in authentic indigenous clothing.

While he had his work shown around the country and abroad, much of it was showcased in New Mexico, including life-sized sculpture of a Native American warrior at the State Capitol.

Molly McGary says her husband kept his illness private.

He is also survived by their 16-year-old daughter.

Funeral services are pending.
