Greater Springfield Visitors Bureau seeks casino partnership

Posted: Updated:

The Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to partner with whichever casino developer builds in Western Mass.

They spoke before the Massachusetts Gaming Commission Thursday afternoon in Boston.

The Visitors Bureau has created their own gaming committee that includes local business owners.

They told the commission Thursday they've been in talks with both Mohegan Sun and MGM, and they're looking to get an official partnership with both of them.

Mary Kay Wydra of the Visitors Bureau and Peter Rosskothen who also runs the Delaney House and Log Cabin spoke before the commission.

They say currently, tourists spend nearly $662 million in Western Mass, now they're trying to boost that number.

They're hoping to create a regional destination out of Western Mass with the help of a resort casino.

They say they want to have official partnerships with both of the developers, that way no matter which one is ultimately selected by the gaming commission they'll have a regional partner to attract tourists to the Pioneer Valley.

"We do believe it's a new attraction that will enter our region, it's an attraction unlike any other we've had in terms of magnitude and size, we believe it can extend stays," said Mary Kay Wydra, President of the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau Gaming Committee.

"We're not looking for a donation...we're looking for the developers to spend money on marketing that promotes the Pioneer Valley," said Peter Rosskothen chair of the Greater Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau Gaming Committee and owner of the Log Cabin and Delaney House.

The gaming commissioners told them that while they can't force the casino developers to partner with them, they commend their efforts to create this type of partnership.

The Greater Springfield Convention and Visitor's Bureau says they will continue to pursue those partnerships and will be back in front of the gaming commission soon.
