Perfect timing for red lights

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It will generally take from 79 seconds to 114 seconds to drive from Mountain to Campbell on Speedway. Of course, there are variables like time of day, volume of traffic and weather.

But for the most part, that's the average.

At least, according to studies done by U of A engineer, Dr. Larry Head.

He's helping a group of grad students who received a $65,000 grant from the city of 'Tucson to install Bluetooth devices from one end of Speedway to the other, to time cars as they traverse the street.

The question is: why is that data important?

According to Dr. Head, motorists can use the data to save time. If Speedway or Broadway are crowded the driver can "find a better way to go."

It would be a big time saver for delivery companies like UPS or FedEx.

But it could also be money saver for taxpayers.

City engineers can use traffic flow patterns to determine the best places for construction projects or "determine if a project works."

Dr. Head says PAG and the RTA want to install the devices all ten of Tucson's busiest corridors to determine the best places to use construction dollars.

Another project he's working on involves several states, cities and counties. It's a $1.5 million study which will take 18 months.

In the end, motorists may be able to use their smart phones and other smart technology to make driving a bit more pleasant.

Motorists who come up to a stop light.
