COWPENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate legend has inspired a haunted attraction open this month in Cowpens.

Owner of Wompus Woods, Timothy Jones said it was years ago he first encountered something in the Cowpens woods that seemed unbelievable.

"We spotted a big creature. To this day we don't know what it is. It looked like half wolf, part buffalo, part man," said Jones.

Jones said the sighting was beyond chilling.

"It's so scary, you actually freeze. It's like a coldness," said Jones.

Jones said he's been obsessed with the creature ever since, and that's what inspired him to create a haunted trail, fitted with its own group of spooks. He warned visitors that they may even see the wompus during their journey.
