Execution of Moon Smoke Shop/Firefighter Union Hall murderer nears after 17 years

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

One of the men responsible for a killing spree that claimed six lives will be put to death 17 years later.

Attorneys for Robert Glen Jones, Jr. are appealing to the Supreme Court.  But as the schedule stands, Jones is still scheduled for execution Wednesday morning.

Jones and Scott Nordstrom killed two people at the Moon Smoke Shop on May 30th, 1996.  As the two entered, Jones immediately shot one customer in the back of the head.  Nordstrom executed an employee who tried to get away.  The two took the money in the register and fled with the help of Nordstrom's brother, David.

Two weeks later they struck the Firefighter Union Hall and claimed four more lives.

Jones shot three people at the bar and took the wallet of one of them.  Nordstrom killed the bartender who couldn't open the safe.  They took the money from the register and fled.

The pair was later arrested when David Nordstrom called police.

Robert Jones has been on death row since 1998.  His attorneys are appealing to the Supreme Court on the claim that the prosecutor withheld evidence in the trial.

The daughter of Maribeth Munn, one of Jones' victims at the Firefighter Union Hall, will be watching him put to death Wednesday morning.

"Since he's actually the one that shot my mother, he saw her die.  I will see him die and that will close this book," she said in late August, and confirmed as much Monday.

In the time since then, the Supreme Court ruled that juries, not judges, determine the death sentence. Scott Nordstrom tried to get out of the death sentence under that rule.  But the court resentenced him to death row.

Jones' sentence had already been upheld before that ruling.

Tucson News Now's J.D. Wallace will be a witness to Wednesday's execution and will report from Florence.
