EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Easley man went out hunting for deer on Monday but came home with a bigger prize.

Heath Smith killed a 609-pound black bear in northern Greenville County when he was out hunting.

Smith said he thought he would shoot a deer before he ever shot a bear. He said he had never killed a bear before.

It took Smith over two hours to get it out of the woods with his truck, he said.

Smith said he plans to take it to a taxidermist to get a full body mount.

Bear hunting season goes from Oct. 17 to 23 for the still hunt with no dogs. The party dog hunt season goes from October 24 to 30. Hunters are not allowed to kill a sow with cubs or bears 100 pounds or less.
