Solar and Sustainable Home Tour open to public this weekend

Posted: Updated:

Donna DiFrancesco's home in the historic Evergreen District of Mesa is one of the homes featured on this weekend's Solar and Sustainable Home Tour. The purpose is to show the public simple things that can be done to make a home more green and sustainable, using renewable energy.

"The big thing is to show people that going green is every day. It's not some futuristic, geodesic dome or something like that. Going green can be an everyday looking home," said DiFrancesco.

From solar panels to dual-paned windows and even recycled concrete, to the tankless water heater and high-efficiency toilets - almost every part of the home has been built or retrofitted with environment in mind.

"What I would love is that we see as many solar panels as we see swimming pools here in the Valley," added DiFrancesco.

Included in the long list of efficiency and conservation is insulation made out of recycled blue jeans.

DiFrancesco, who got her inspiration after taking a similar tour years ago, said that one of the goals of the tour is to illustrate that going green is not as difficult or as expensive as many people think.

"What is it you purchase that helps pay for itself over time? Our stereo doesn't pay for itself, our television doesn't pay for itself, my solar panels will eventually pay for themselves," said DiFrancesco.
