CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS5) -

An Arizona man arrested in Iowa is being investigated as a possible suspect in scamming several churches around the country.

Iowa's Linn County sheriff, Brian Gardner, said Steven M. Brown, 49, was arrested Monday by the Cedar Rapids Police Department on second- and third-degree theft charges.

"The charges stem from him leaving without paying his bill at two area hotels," Gardner said.

Brown allegedly used a stolen credit card to check into the Cedar Rapids hotels.

He reportedly claimed to be moving to Cedar Rapids and asked local churches for money with his hotel bill until he could cash a check, Radio Iowa in Des Moines reports.

Gardner said Brown is being held on $11,500 bond on the third-degree theft charge and appeared in court Wednesday morning on the charge of second-degree theft.
