Tenants at Greenville apartment complex fed up with mold problem

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A group of tenants at Evergreen Place Apartments in Greenville said they have gotten sick from an ongoing mold and mildew problem at the complex.

Connie Clark said she has to take prescription medicine after having serious allergic reactions to her apartment. She now has to wear a mask when she goes there to shower. She is staying with a friend because she said the problem is so severe.

"I've got it in my lungs and I've got it in my chest," she said.

Former tenants said they moved from Evergreen Place because management there is not doing enough to eliminate the problem.

"They would spray over [the mold] and then paint it," said Willie Foster, a former tenant.

She said the mold kept coming back when they would clean it.

"I had to get in touch with FOX 21 and my lawyer to get some help," said Clark. "I need help real bad because I am homeless right now."

Tenant Valerie Gray has lived at the complex since 1975. She said her granddaughter had to be taken to the emergency room when she was having trouble breathing.

"[The doctor] said I'm going to be fine once we get out of the apartment," 11-year-old Somylia Gray said.

"I went in her bedroom and I pulled her bed out and it was just infested with mold," said Valerie Gray.

Somylia moved away from the complex with her mother two years ago and the problem stopped. Connie and Somylia said the complex is uninhabitable.

"They need to push these [apartments] over and rebuild them from the ground up," Connie said.

"I want to see this place get torn down," said Somylia.

Management at Evergreen Place would not comment on the problem, and calls to the complex's owner were not returned.
