Two gubernatorial candidates visit Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Two gubernatorial candidates made stops in Springfield Thursday.

Republican candidate Charlie Baker spent his morning visiting with students and staff at the Veritas Preparatory Charter School in Springfield.

The only declared GOP candidate in the race tells CBS 3 he's running on a platform focusing on three major issues; adding that he is making some changes on the campaign trail this time following his 2010 loss.

"Last time I talked about a zillion different things because I am just interested in a lot of stuff. I think this time I really am going to try and focus on the big three," said Baker. "What can we do to improve the economy? What can we do to enhance the performance of our schools and what can we do to make sure that every community in Massachusetts across the state is a thriving successful community?"

Meantime, over on Main Street in the city Democratic candidate Treasurer Steve Grossman came out for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Biergarten. He says his message to voters is that he is devoted to creating jobs.

"Western Massachusetts has a high level of unemployment. People have concerns about jobs. We are going to create those jobs, we are going to create 50,000 new manufacturing jobs in this Commonwealth over the next five years when I am governor," said Grossman.

A recent poll conducted by Western New England University places Attorney General Martha Coakley ahead of all the other candidates.

The poll puts Coakley and Grossman above Baker.

Also in the race on the democratic side are Donald Berwick, Juliette Kayyem, and Joseph Avellone.

Independent candidate Evan Fulchuk is also in the race.

The primary is scheduled for September of 2014 and the general election for November of 2014.
