ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Following a reverse evacuation on Monday, eight students have been suspended from a high school in Anderson County, according to Kyle Newton with Anderson District 5.

Newton said seven of the students were suspended for violating the school's gang policy and one student was found with drugs. Six of the students are male and two are female, Newton said.

Superintendent Tom Wilson said, "We want to send a clear message that any gangs, drugs, weapons, or intimidation is not welcome in our school, and will be dealt with swiftly and harshly."

The students are suspended until they have a disciplinary hearing, Newton said. He said it will take place within the next 10 days and the administration is recommending expulsion.

He said the reverse evacuation kept anyone from entering the school or leaving, including keeping students in their classrooms.

"Our school administration acted quickly upon this situation, and we will not tolerate any actions that can contribute to an unsafe school environment," Wilson said.
