A northern Arizona man has been sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison for the murder of a woman in Tuba City.
Steven Begaye pleaded guilty in June to second-degree murder in the 2012 death of Lolita Bedoni. He was sentenced earlier this week in federal court.
According to court documents, Begaye struck Bedoni in the stomach with his hands, causing severe bleeding. Prosecutors say he then dumped her body in a pond at Black Mesa and used a broken beer bottle to sexually mutilate her.
Authorities say Begaye, Bedoni and another man had been drinking at the time.
A medical examiner listed the cause of death as homicidal violence.
Begaye also must serve five years of supervised released following his prison sentence.
