TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Pima County Sheriff's Department issued a warning to residents about a new healthcare scam sweeping the area.

Fraud Unit detectives have been made aware of people claiming to be representatives with Medicare or the Affordable Care Act who call the public to ask for their personal information.

In a recent case brought to detectives' attention, a suspect called a resident claiming to be an employee with Medicare. The suspect was able to gather the victim's social security number, and also requested bank account information before the victim realized it was a scam.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department would like to remind the public of how important it is to keep their personal information safe.

Some safety tips to remember:

- Always verify the identity of the person trying to obtain personal information.

- Never give personal information to someone over the phone or via email.

- Personal information includes birth dates, social security numbers, maiden names, addresses and bank account numbers.

- Maintain a record of the phone call or solicitation. Write down the phone number that the person is calling from, the time and date they called, and the caller's name and reported affiliation.

If you feel you have been a victim of fraud, call 911 or report it online by visiting www.ic3.gov
