BELTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Several Upstate communities are seeing a spike in crime, and the people who live there say they're fed up and are going to do something about it.

On Thursday, a new neighborhood watch group formed called the Cannon Bottom Watchdogs.

About 70 people attended the first meeting, including Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper and a few investigators.

"It's very frustrating to work very hard for what you have, then to have someone come and steal that," said Barbara Wagher, a victim and one of the group's organizers.

They hope working together will finally bring an end to the crime.

"As a community, that will be the strongest force," said Wagher.

Skipper said that might actually work, as long as they stick together, take down vehicle tag numbers and descriptions, and truly watch their neighbors property.

But he said, despite their, anger the members need to know their limits.

"We don't want them to take the law into their own hands because some of them don't understand the law, but when somebody is on your property, I encourage citizens to have a right to defend themselves if they are at risk of harm or even death," said Skipper.

Deputies at the meeting said the best way to make sure you can get your things back if they are stolen is to make a list of all of your property so you know what exactly is missing if you are the victim of a home invasion, and make sure to record the serial numbers on all of the items.
