SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Authorities responded to a Cochise County residence overnight for a reported kidnapping, which has now turned into a shooting investigation.

The Cochise County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 1000 block of E. Chaco Lane in Palominas, where a woman reported an armed man kidnapped two children just after 11 p.m Thursday.

The caller told police her neighbor ran to her house for assistance regarding the safety of her two children.

The neighbor, a 36-year-old woman, said her 39-year-old ex-boyfriend physically forced her to the floor and fired a shot at her head, according to a news release. She said her 3-year-old and 5-year-old kids ran out of the house into the front yard after the gunfire.

The suspect reportedly took the victim's cell phone and ran into the front yard to get the kids. The victim said she ran outside and saw her kids with the suspect in his 1994 Chevy truck, while presumably still armed, according to police.

That's when she ran to her neighbor's house for help. She wanted to go back to the truck to get her kids but law enforcement told her to wait until they arrived on scene.

Sheriff's Deputies, along with U.S. Border Patrol Agents, Sierra Vista Police Department, and Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the scene and said the children were safe inside the car, but the suspect fled the area.

A Sheriff's Office K-9 unit from Douglas searched the area and the man, later identified as Shannon Ritz of Sierra Vista, was found dead in the roadway around 12:30 a.m. Friday, approximately 300 yards from the initial scene, police said. He was shot in the head, according to authorities.

Deputies recovered a handgun and the suspect's vehicle, which was towed to Bisbee for evidence processing.

Authorities will take Ritz's body to the Pima County Medical Examiners' Office for an autopsy.

The victim did not report a physical injury but will be treated for anxiety at the Sierra Vista Regional Health Care Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
