The former Chapin School on Meadow Street in Chicopee will soon be turned into affordable housing for homeless veterans. The group Soldier On said Friday they would turn the vacant building into more than 40 apartments.
Work should begin around fall of 2014 and may be complete by October of 2015.
The school building has been vacant for nearly a decade. Several attempts to get developers for the building fell through for various reasons.
Soldier On partnered with O'Connell Development Group for the project.
Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonnette also announced Friday, the project had received $250,000 in federal grants.
