Council: No decision on Woodruff police chief suspension

Posted: Updated:
WOODRUFF, SC (FOX Carolina) -

At a Woodruff City Council meeting Tuesday, council members said they would not make a decision on the recent suspension of police chief Darrell Dawkins until an investigation has been completed.

Dawkins was placed on administrative leave with pay Friday, but council members still would not comment on why he was suspended. The city manager told FOX Carolina Friday that she is looking into the police department's policies and procedures.

City Council met in executive session for more than an hour, prompting those in attendance at the open meeting to stomp their feet and clap their hands as they waited for members to emerge. When they did, citizens voiced their displeasure at the lack of a decision.

Council members said an interim police chief would be appointed for no more than 60 days.

The city manager told FOX Carolina Friday that Dawkins was not found of any wrongdoing, but that she felt she needed to remove him so she could freely discuss the issues with staff.
