WALHALLA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Fire departments across Oconee County will soon be equipped with pet oxygen masks, officials announced on Wednesday.

The masks are being donated by Invisible Fence, who run Project Breathe, a pet oxygen mask donation system that provides masks to local fire departments.

"Various sources estimate that up to 150,000 pets die each year in fires, most succumbing to smoke inhalation. In most states, emergency responders are not equipped to deal with the crisis because they lack the specially designed pet oxygen masks," a representative of the Oconee County Emergency Services Fire Division said in a statement.

The masks will be presented to Oconee County Emergency Services on Thursday, Oct. 31 by Invisible Fence Brand at the Westminster Fire Department.
