Berrien, Cook softball teams pulling for each other in Elite 8

Two south Georgia rivals will see each other at this week's GHSA State Softball Championships,  but both are actually pulling for each other.

The Berrien Rebelettes and Cook Lady Hornets saw plenty of each other this year, and may have more in store.

They are two of only eight teams remaining in Class AA.

Both teams made their way to Columbus Wednesday for the state championships beginning Thursday.

Berrien and Cook battled back and forth all year for the Region 1-AA crown. The Lady Hornets took the regular season title, but it was Berrien besting Cook in the region finals.

Now they find themselves taking on the state's best, but both squads say they're pulling for each other.

"I hope both of us do really well," says Cook head coach Scott Ray. "I hope we're playing each other Saturday around 1:00 [in the championship game]."

"We play each other so much. We're big rivals, but we're good friends too," says Berrien head coach Michelle Jones. "We're looking forward to going and them being there as well."

In a sport where many of the teams considered the state's elite are located north of Macon, the Rebelettes and Lady Hornets feel their carrying the flag for south Georgia.

Both teams say it would be a huge accomplishment to bring home the state title, not just for the teams, but their communities as well.

"It would be exciting because Adel's like one big family," says Cook senior 3B Shelbie Rowe.

"It would mean a lot to a bunch of sports to have hope that a little town like this could make it this far," says Berrien senior pitcher Sierra Johnson.

Berrien opens championship play against Calhoun Thursday. Cook will play Heard County.

The Seminole County Indians are also headed to Columbus for the A Public championships. The Lady Indians take on Telfair County Thursday morning.
