Bullet found in Windsor girl's bed

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A Hartford police officer is under investigation after a bullet turned up in the bed of a 12-year-old at a home in Windsor.

According to police, off-duty Sgt. Eric Smith was in his upstairs bedroom and unloaded his handgun on Sept. 25.

Smith told police in Windsor that "he accidentally fired the gun one time." The bullet actually pierced his bedroom wall and landed in his neighbor's home next door.

The bullet blasted through his wood siding and into the second floor bedroom of a 12-year-old girl.

The child's father called police and told them his daughter "found a bullet on her bed and a hole in the wall."

Smith has been in trouble before. He was arrested while a member of the Hartford Police Department in 2000, and was charged with sexually assaulting a woman on duty. However, that case went to trial and Smith was acquitted, retaining his job.

Prior to that, sources said Smith was forced to resign from the Farmington Police Department after a case of harassment.

Smith remains with the Hartford Police Department as police complete their internal investigation.

"There are accidental discharges," said Hartford police Lt. Brian Foley. "It happens unfortunately and we'd want it reported, obviously. You'd want to check and make sure nobody was injured immediately."

Nobody answered the door at Smith's home on Thursday, but neighbors told Eyewitness News they're surprised to hear what happened.

"Of course he should have gone outside his home to see if there was any hole in the wall," said Charles Dougall of Windsor.

"That girl was very lucky," said Sotir Dodi of Windsor.
