SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said a teen trick-or-treating with friends was struck and killed by an SUV Thursday night.

Erica Adrianna Fields, 17, died at the hospital, according to Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger. Fields was a student at Spartanburg High School.

Clevenger said Fields was trick-or-treating with friends when she was struck along Fernwood Drive, near the Cottonwood Trail around 9:30 p.m.

She was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour after the crash.

Spartanburg Public Safety is investigating the crash. No charges have been filed.

A spokesperson for Spartanburg School District Seven said counselors are on hand Friday to help students and staff with the loss.

Erica was an 11th-grade student, the second oldest of five children.

"Erica was a vibrant, beautiful young lady who touched all she came in contact with," said Erika Shoolbred, with District 7. "Her smile and zest for life will always be remembered. The administration, faculty, staff and students of Spartanburg High School and School District 7 would like to ask everyone in the community to pray for Erica's family and her friends."

Shoolbred has an older sister who went to Spartanburg high and now attends Clarke in Atlanta; a sister in the 10th grade at SHS; a brother who attends the Freshman Academy; and a younger brother who attends Carver Middle School.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident," said Spartanburg High School Principal Jeff Stevens. "Our students and staff are all very close, so this is very painful to all of us. We are committed to doing everything we can to assist the family."

Fields was not the only child hit by a vehicle while out walking on Halloween Thursday. The Highway Patrol said a 12 year-old boy ran out in front of a car and the driver couldn't stop in Roebuck. The child was injured in the wreck.
