Woman nearly loses home because of no pothole reimbursement

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

It was a monster pothole that sent at least six cars into the pavement. Now, a Richmond woman says she nearly lost her home, because she has not been reimbursed for pothole damage.

"I had to put [my car] in the shop, and I had to use my own rent money to get it out," said Michelle Campbell in an interview Friday. "Thank God my bank has check protection, or I would have lost my home."

The pothole stretched four feet long by one foot wide on Cary Street Road on Oct. 10, and has since been repaired. Campbell said that damage to her car exceeded $1,000, and her claim work has come to a standstill.

"I had a feeling it would take some time," Campbell said. "But just getting in touch with somebody, trying to get the ball rolling, I didn't think it would take that long."

NBC12 reached out on Friday to CorVel, the company the City of Richmond is using to handle claims from the incident.

In a telephone conversation, the CorVel employee working with Campbell said she will now work to complete the claim faster, and will get back to Campbell in the near future. Because of client privacy, the employee could not comment further.

"I'm mad, angry, that I keep getting the run-around from people," Campbell said. "And it's not fair."

All drivers with damage may file claims with the City Attorney's Office by calling 646-7940.
