SAN DIEGO (ICE/CNN) - Police found a sophisticated drug tunnel that went from Mexico to the United States and was a long as six football fields.

Squinting in the sun, local and federal officials announced they shut down a massive drug tunnel; they call it a super tunnel.

"They are sophisticated. They are high tech," said Laura Duffy, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California.

So high tech, the tunnel had an electric rail system, ventilation and even hydraulic steel doors.

Investigators found the tunnel on Wednesday, saying it went from Tijuana, Mexico to a warehouse in San Diego for the sole purpose of moving drugs into the U.S.

Cartels, however, did not get the chance to do that.

"I think we are 100 percent confident as a group here that they did not move one gram of narcotics through that tunnel," said Bill Sherman, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's San Diego Field Division.

In addition to shutting down the tunnel, police made three arrests, seized more than eight tons of marijuana and a first for one of these drug tunnels 325 pounds of cocaine.

Cartels spend millions of dollars digging these tunnels and this latest bust is considered a major setback. Officials believe the Sinaloa cartel is responsible for the tunnel.

"We are determined to make this a big waste of your dirty money. Not only will we take your drugs and shut down your tunnels before you even get an opportunity to use them , but we're now in a position where we are going after you management," Duffy said.

Officials say the tunnel represents desperation on the part of drug runners-increasingly forced to dig deep to move their product.
