ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
An Asheville police officer who died when his patrol car crashed off of an Interstate 240 bridge will be laid to rest on Monday.
Robert Bingaman's car went off the Jeff Bowen Bridge on I-240 240 westbound near mile marker 3 around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 29 in Asheville.
Bingaman served for six years with the Asheville Police Department and served as a sergeant in the Marines, serving two floats in the Mediterranean and South America.
A service for the six-year veteran was held at Biltmore Baptist Church, located at 35 Clayton Rd. in Arden, Monday at 10 a.m.
Following the service, the escort route went from the church to Long Shoals, then to I-26 West to I-40 East and exit on exit 59. The funeral procession will exit left onto Highway 70 East to Grovestone Road, and then onto Old Highway 70 to the Western North Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery.
Police said drivers should expect traffic delays between 11 a.m. and noon Monday because intersections will be blocked during the escort to the cemetery.
Police said the public was allowed to park on the side of the road and pay tribute to Bingaman in areas where it is safe to do so.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Officials have not said if Bingaman was en route to a call at the time of the crash.
