After three years with Arizona State University, the athletic director is returning to his home state of Texas.
Steve Patterson announced Tuesday that he's leaving for the University of Texas, after agreeing last week to stay.
Patterson was named ASU's Vice President for University Athletics and Athletics Director on March 28, 2012.
Prior to ASU, Patterson spent nearly a quarter of a century as an executive in the NFL with the Houston Texans, in the NBA with the Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers, and in professional hockey with the Houston Aeros.
ASU said they've appointed Senior Vice President James Rund as the interim athletic director while they begin a national search for Patterson's replacement.
"With the opportunity to win Pac-12 and national championships and to renovate Sun Devil Stadium, the position of vice president of athletics at ASU will be attractive to a wide range of candidates across the country," ASU President Michael M. Crow said in a statement Tuesday.
