MOUNTAIN REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A 74-year-old hiker had to be airlifted out of the woods after an accidental shooting on Tuesday, according to officials with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Services.

Emergency services workers said the man was seven miles into the Yellow Branch Wilderness when he accidentally shot himself.

Emergency workers said because of how far in the woods the victim was and the severity of his injuries they decided he should be hoisted out by the South Carolina Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team.

They said the man was lifted out of the woods by a Black Hawk helicopter and taken to an awaiting air ambulance to transport him to the hospital.

Officials said the man is in critical condition.

The accidental shooting happened on the Yellow Branch Trail off Highway 28 in Mountain Rest.
