The town of Buckeye wants a name change, but it needed to go to voters for approval. According to town manager, Stephen Cleveland, the town of Buckeye wants to be the city of Buckeye to attract more business.

"We have found that in our discussions with business and industry that a city connotes growth and the ability to support their interests," Cleveland said.

As polls closed, the results will be tallied with the Maricopa County Recorder's Office.

In Scottsdale, several bond issues were on the ballot which would improve community facilities, bolster flood protection and make improvements to city roads. If all four bond questions pass, the city would have an extra $212 million to work with.

Scottsdale fire Chief Tom Shannon says the department desperately needs the public safety bond to pass in order to make upgrades to some of the department's fire facilities.

"They don't meet fire station standards really on any level in an urban area, they just don't," Shannon said. "We have both male and female firefighters that require separate living conditions and these facilities really challenge that capability."

Elsewhere in the state, school bonds and budget overrides dominated the ballot boxes. In Maricopa County alone, more than 30 school districts requested either a bond or a budget override, including Phoenix Union, Tempe Union and Scottsdale Unified.

Phoenix Union spokesman Craig Pletenik says every school district in the state is working with regulated budgets and it's leaving the voters to decide what is needed in the classroom.

"There's a question I think every voter needs to ask," Pletenik said. "Collectively, how important is it for a community to support their schools versus how much can I save on my next tax bill?"
