The Valley man who lost a finger trying to steal copper wire is talking only to CBS 5 News about what happened earlier last month.

Last week, police said the piece of evidence Joshua Goverman left at the scene pointed right back at him. But he said his situation is very serious, though it doesn't justify what he did.

"Even if it was the wrong decision, I felt like I had to do something," Goverman said. The 29-year-old said his family has come upon hard times.

"My dad has COPD and congestive heart failure, he has a pacemaker defibrillator, my little brother is mentally handicapped," Goverman said. "I finally couldn't take it anymore, we had no food in the house, no toilet paper."

On top of that, Goverman is a convicted felon, so he said he hasn't found anyone who will hire him.

"We were driving by and I saw the wire and knew I could make a little bit of cash with that," Goverman said.

He said he grabbed the wire, hopped in the car, and told his friend to gun it. But the wire got caught, and Goverman said he felt his hand burning. He let go of it, but felt a pop, and looked down to see what happened.

"I was sweating profusely, every time my heart beat blood would squirt out of the tip of my finger," Goverman said.

Police got a print off Goverman's finger, and saw that he posted a picture of his hand on Facebook. Goverman said it was his way of making light of the situation.

But he said he would like to apologize to the person he tried to steal from.

"I'm sorry, it wasn't anything against you, I was just trying to help my family," Goverman said.

That poor decision not only cost Goverman his finger, but now it'll cost him 60 days in jail.
