SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC, will join students in Spartanburg on Friday for a special tribute to veterans.

The program begins at 1 p.m. at Spartanburg Christian Academy and will include a parade and performances by the school's band, chorus and elementary school students. Gowdy is this year's guest speaker.

The annual event is open to the public and invites all veterans and active duty personnel including military, police and firemen, to attend.

The school is asking that all veterans and active duty citizens who will be in attendance contact the school office at 864-578-4238 with service information (branch of service), so they can be recognized during the event.

In addition to honoring veterans, SCA students collect items to send to military personnel currently serving. They said the Spartanburg Chapter 124 of Blue Star Mothers will ship all items collected to reach service men and women in time for Christmas.

The school said monetary donations will also be accepted to help pay for shipping costs. If someone is short on cash, they said a favorite among soldiers is simply a letter with words of support and prayers for safety.

Suggested items for the military care packages:

  • Small size plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioners, lotions, toothpaste
  • Pain relievers (aspirin, Aleve, Tylenol, etc)
