GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

There was a lot of hugging and a lot of tears today as a soldier returned to his home in Greenville from Afghanistan and surprised his children.

Dr. Paul Carroll, a cardiologist and member of the National Guard, returned from a six-month tour on Friday, but his children weren't expecting it.

Carroll's 13-year-old son Josh was at an awards ceremony at his school when he got the surprise of his life.

"I don't think it'd be the same if she told me. I feel like the time would stretch out more, but in there, it was fast - it was great," Josh said.

Carroll's other two sons, who go to school in Charleston, had no idea either. They came to visit and were surprised at who greeted them.

"He's teaching me by his own example and everything he does I look up to, and I just am trying to image him because that's what I'm gonna be one day," said his son Jon.
