Dozens file complaint with VDOT after wet paint splatters in rain

Gum Spring (WWBT) -

Outraged viewers reach out to NBC12 on Facebook angry at VDOT for putting down a fresh coat of yellow paint on the road right before it started to rain.

The yellow paint splashed onto dozens of vehicles in Gum Spring and 26 complaints were filed.

VDOT contractors painted two roads on October 19: Paynes Mill Road and New Line Road.

Warren Hicks was one of dozens of people driving over the newly painted road that Saturday to get to Dogwood Baptist Church.

Hicks said he immediately took warm water and soap and was able to wash most of it off, but what upsets him the most is the fact that this happened to something he cherishes very much.

"A person works all his life, to get something nice, and it takes a long time to get it, and once you get it, you like to appreciate it," said Hicks.

Slade Hart still has most of the splatter on his vehicle. Hart says he's now waiting for some sort of response from the contractor.

"They just need to make it right as far as getting it cleaned even if it's just buffed and a new paint job, I mean, they at least owe us that," said Hart.

"A lot of people were very mad, we have friends who live all through here, everybody's on the same boat, everybody's fussing they got 26 complaints I'm surprised it wasn't a whole lot more," said Hart.

A VDOT rep said they will not be responsible for the damage. The complaints are being handled by the contractor and VDOT says that company will now be reaching out to the individuals, have them fill out a form and hopefully take care of the mess.
