Fund set-up to help Local veteran who may become homeless on Veteran's Day

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As Veteran's Day gets closer, the weekend will be especially challenging for one Anderson county veteran who now faces homelessness.

Deborah Wert-Ferner says she served the US Army for seven and half years. However she isn't getting ready for a parade or special ceremony, instead she says she's going to be struggling to keep a roof over her head.

"I've never been this low," said Wert-Ferner. "I've had problems before, but never this bad."

Friday her granddaughters toys and crib littered a front lawn, surrounded by Wert-Ferners clothes and shoes. She was trying to sell all of her belongings just to get by.

She's not alone, according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans there are more than 60,000 homeless veterans on any given night, and 13 percent of all homeless people are veterans.

Now Deborah Wert-Ferner is just hoping, she'll be one of the ones that make their way out of that statistic.

Wert-Ferner said the public can donate to a fund that has been set-up at the Anderson branch of the Wood Forest Bank. Wert-Ferrner said people willing to donate can inform the teller they want to donate to the Deborah Wert-Ferner fund.
