A group of civilians and veterans known as the Civil Air Patrol began their Veterans Day weekend with a major training exercise.
Several members from throughout the state, including local squadrons from Westfield, Chicopee and Greenfield, took part in the training at Barnes Municipal Airport.
The Civil Air Patrol is called into action during major disasters.
Saturday's training involved aerial photography and air-to-ground communication.
One of the patrol's members, who is not a veteran, said it is a great experience working with those who are.
"Myself, I'm not prior military, so I find that I learn a lot from my colleagues on operations such as this," said Brian Freeman, a captain of the Westover Composite squadron out of Chicopee. "I really learn a lot about leadership and how to get things done."
