SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

BMW announced the new president of their Spartanburg factory on Monday.

Manfred Erlacher will be succeeding Josef Kerscher, who returned to Germany to run another plant there.

BMW said on their website that Erlacher is a 29-year veteran to the company and previously led their plant in Leipzig, Germany.

"I feel very fortunate to have been selected to lead this plant. Spartanburg is a significant contributor to BMW's global production network and I am excited about the opportunity to direct future growth and expansion in South Carolina's automotive manufacturing industry," said Erlacher.

BMW is working on a $900 million expansion to the plant to add a new model of car, they said on their website.

They said the expansion will also add 1.6 million square feet of production space and increase the capacity to 350,000 vehicles annually by the end of next year.
