GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville City Fire and Parker Fire District are investigating a fire at an abandoned mill at Traction Street and Easley Bridge Road.

Firefighters said a passerby spotted smoke about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the old Piedmont Plush Mill and called 911.

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said Easley Bridge Road was closed because of fire hoses strung across the street.

On Wednesday night, the fire was reportedly burning from inside but flames were not visible from the outside. The fire rekindled Thursday morning, firefighters said.

The building has been abandoned for several years. The chief deputy at the scene Thursday morning said they were looking to see if vagrants had set a fire to keep warm that lost control.

Deputy Chief Tom Thomas said the fire started in an office area of the building, which did not have power supplied for some time.

He said about a quarter of the building was destroyed and they don't want people inside it for safety reasons.
