GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate man pleaded guilty to killing a Greer man and shooting several others during a hostage and standoff situation in 2012.

Shane Young, 30, appeared before a judge at 10 a.m. in Greenville County on Tuesday. According to FOX Carolina's crew in court, Young pleaded guilty to all eight counts of attempted murder, one county of murder and first-degree burglary.

Greenville County deputies said Young shot and killed Kenneth Horton, 49, of Greer, on Oct. 14, 2012 at a home on Skyland Drive, leading to a standoff between Young and deputies.

Deputies said a woman inside the home called 911 saying Young was holding four adults and a child hostage inside the home. About 50 minutes later, deputies said the SWAT team was called in to negotiate with Young and learned that he shot one man and had fired shots when he stormed into the home earlier in the night.

Deputies said once they determined Young would not end the situation peacefully, they began a hostage rescue operation just before midnight by using an explosive device to enter through the back door. Deputies said Young began shooting at them and also fired shots into the bathroom where three people and the 11-year-old girl were being held.

Young shot the girl in the leg then fired shots at deputies, hitting two of them, according to deputies. They said once the injured deputies were moved out of harm's way, a lieutenant and sergeant returned fire, hitting Young twice and taking him into custody.

Young was originally charged with one count of murder, eight counts of attempted murder, five counts of kidnapping, one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, one count of resisting arrest with a deadly with a weapon and one count of discharging firearms into a dwelling following his 2012 arrest.

A judge sentenced Young to life in prison on the murder and burglary charges along with 30 years for each attempted murder charge, to be served consecutively.
