GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Interstate 85 northbound was at a virtual standstill on Wednesday night after deputies said a man was hit by several cars after fleeing from the scene of an assault.

Deputies were called to the Red Roof Inn off of Laurens Road near exit 48 along I-85 on Wednesday night for the assault and battery, according to Lt. Tim Ridgeway with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

The woman who was being assaulted managed to get pepper spray and spray the suspect in the face, Ridgeway said.

As they were responding, deputies started getting calls that a person involved in the incident fled on foot and was seen on I-85 northbound, according to Ridgeway.

At least two drivers called and said they had hit the suspect, deputies said.

Greenville County deputies said they are working the case as an assault and attempted murder. Deputies said the scene started to clear about 6:30 p.m.

A representative of the South Carolina Highway Patrol identified the man Thomas Kusz, 23.

According to online jail records provided by the Greenville County Detention Center, Kusz is charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
