ONLY ON KOLD: Going blind for beauty

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Three women, three nightmare stories of fillers gone wrong.

Melissa Pollak wanted to fill out her smile lines before she turned 50.

"Ended up with filler in my lips and an entire liquid facelift. It was scary and I thought, 'Oh my gosh, what have I done?'"

She had an allergic reaction to what she called a cocktail of three fillers that made her feel her face would break open.

14 years ago, Betty Roseman had some of her own fat injected in her cheeks.

"It wasn't until the right side of my face where the fat injections started to fall down that it became obvious that there was something wrong," she said.

Doctors diagnosed her with everything from Lupus to cancer before everyone realized.

And Lee'a Brim can't stand looking in the mirror after getting bad silicone injections near her eye, cheeks and lips at what's known as a plumper party in someone's living room, an unsterile environment.

"They inject silicone and botox, and do procedures for real cheap," she said.

Dermatologist Dr. Gilly Munavalli says these parties happen every day.

"Hopefully it's a legit product. When its not, its dangerous. When its not, you run into situations like we saw," he said.

And rarely, he says, is a doctor giving these home injections.

In worst case scenarios like Lee'a's, they're not medical professionals at all.

"It was a mistake I definitely regret."

But often it is a nurse wielding the needle.

"I know many nurses who are excellent injectors," Munavalli said. "When we're doing deep tissue injections around eye, I personally would rather have a skilled experienced physician injector do the treatment."

"There have been multiple reported cases of blindness with filler injections in certain parts of the face - the nose - the brow area. Is that blindness reversable? It is not."

All three women came to Dr. Munavalli to fix what others did wrong.

Betty is having luck with the laser treatments he's giving her.

"This has been reduced 30 percent."

They shared their stories to help others.

"I'm all for to each their own. Just please do your research."

"You really really have to do your research."

Because no line or wrinkle is worth the risk of this.

The doctor says the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery has guidelines your physician should follow.

Ask to make sure and be sure he or she not only explains the complications that can arise with the use of fillers, but also how to reverse them.

If they don't ask you to sign a consent form, that's a red flag.
