TOWNVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As a truck driver, Bill Davis is always on the road. He's witnessed a lot, too, like deadly wrecks and bad collisions along Interstate 85.

"I've seen some real nasty ones," Davis said.

Investigators with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety want to prevent or decrease those wrecks. That's why they say they installed new high-tech equipment at an old weigh station in Townville. It's located on Interstate 85 Northbound in Anderson County.

"You don't have to pull in and stop and wait. I mean, it's real convenient," Davis said.

Davis drove through the new station Thursday night.

"They can weigh you out there on the road and tell before you come to the scale whether or not you're too heavy," he said.

Davis says the new technology allows him to keep moving to his destination. Officers with the State Transport Police say the new weigh-in-motion equipment helps keep all drivers safe.

"It's called in-line technology," Cpl. Mike Still with the State Transport Police said.

He's the community relations officer with the department. He says the new high-tech detection system is to keep drivers safe.

"Unless they're violating the law - oversized, overweight or if they have a bad safety record, that's the only reason they're being pulled into the station," Still said.

The system also reads license plates.

"So when it reads their license plate, it runs it through the database to show us their safety code," Still said.

He says when trucks have 80,000-pound loads, it could create a dangerous situation for the truck driver and others on the road.

"It creates potholes. It tears up our roads," Still said.

There's only one other weigh station in the Southeast with the same technology, and it's located in Dorchester County.
