An Upstate dog who had to have leg surgery after enduring years of abuse at a puppy mill is back with her adoptive owners.

Last week, FOX Carolina introduced viewers to Lucy, an American bulldog mix who was adopted by the Breznican family, who had medical and financial problems of their own.

Lucy has given them a lot of love, but more than a week ago, she broke her leg. The break was possibly the result of longtime malnourishment at the puppy mill.

The Breznicans did not know what to do, so they created a fund to possibly raise money for Lucy's surgery. The options were surgery, amputation or euthanization.

"At first, we were told the surgery was going to be outrageous," said Jessica Breznican.

Originally, the Breznicans were told the surgery would cost almost $4,000. Instead, Jasmine Weaver with Jazzy Pitbull Kennel and Rescue in Greenville suggested they take Lucy to Foothills Veterinary Hospital.

That is where Dr. Dan Randall operated on Lucy Tuesday for a fraction of the cost, the family said. And the world responded to the call for donations.

"People in Germany, people in Poland, Australia contacted Lucy, people in England...she's got quite a following now," said Jessica.

The Breznicans raised almost $1,500. The surgery only cost close to $900. The remainder of the proceeds will benefit Jazzy Pitbull Kennel and Rescue.

Lucy now has a pin in her leg while her bone mends.

"Hopefully, when we're done, she'll have a nice, useful, pain-free leg," said Dr. Randall.

Now, Lucy is back, giving much-needed kisses and getting well-deserved love in return.

The Breznicans would also like to thank Elle the Pitbull, Doreen Howe, Helen Grant and Elisa Black-Taylor for their contributions to Lucy's cause.
