Some shelters in the Birmingham area are not turning anyone away due to the cold weather.
The Firehouse Shelter in downtown Birmingham has an open door policy when it is really cold outside. They have a capacity of about 70 people, however, one staff member says he has seen as many as 100 in there. He says it might be tight quarters, but the most important thing is to get people inside and out of the cold.
"We don't turn anyone away when it's cold or raining," said Leon Weems. "With the type of clients we serve, cold weather, they have colds, they can catch pneumonia or even freeze to death out there."
The Birmingham branch of the Salvation Army also says no one is going to be turned away. They have prepared for this weather and will be able to accommodate those that come through their doors.
