Buyer beware: How to spot fake Carolina-Clemson tickets

Posted: Updated:

Tim Silo is doing it big Saturday.

"This is one of our couches, very fine leather," Tim said.

He rolled into the Palmetto state in style from New York along with his brother Kevin, whose son is a Gamecock senior.

They brought more than a dozen along for the ride.

"We heard it's the biggest football game in the south... half of them have tickets already, some we got direct some we got from stubhub," said Kevin. "Others are going to wait around until game time."

Others include Tim.

"I'm gonna take my chances tomorrow, wing it on game day," Tim said.

Now he's a pro-sports connoisseur, and also a cop, so he's not worried about buying a bum ticket.

But for those of us who aren't experts at buying tickets off the street, it can be an intimidating process. The scalpers don't always look suspicious and neither does their merchandise.

Around 50 fake tickets were sold and later rejected at last year's Clemson game.

Fakes are pretty good, but are duller and slightly blurrier than a real ticket. You'll notice it has a much brighter sheen to it as well.

Bar codes need to be unique and clearly printed and the ticket should have a perforated edge.

While you may see a single game ticket like the one on the bottom, they aren't as common.

U-S-C says if you have a doubt, you can always ask the seller to actually go with you to the ticket office at gate 26 for a scan.

"You gotta be careful," Kevin said "Some of its legal, some of its not."

The Silo brothers aren't worried about it, though. They aren't worried about the game either.

"This is where Clemson's going to be, the toilet," Tim said. "We're going to flush 'em. Bye Tajh!"
