Hendersonville counselor's Facebook post goes viral

HENDERSONVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

These days, you would be hard-pressed to find a pre-teen who isn't on Facebook.

"A lot of them have iPads and iPhones," said Julie Culp, a counselor at Indian Lake Elementary School in Hendersonville.

When it comes to sharing pictures, feelings and status updates,"you can do things so quickly now," Culp said. "You know you do it instantly and it's there. You can't really take it back."

In an age of mass and over-sharing, the middle school counselor was motivated to give her students a lesson in Internet safety. She did it using her own Facebook page.

"I posted a picture in an attempt to talk to my fifth graders about the Internet and how quickly a photo can be shared, or really anything that you put, can be shared, with other people."

The picture read, "I'm talking to my 5th grade students about Internet safety and how quickly a photo can be seen by lots of people. If you are reading this, please 'LIKE.' Thanks."

"Initially, they guessed that I had probably around 250 likes," Culp said.

But, to her students' surprise, the photo went viral and so did her lesson. Since Nov. 18, it has gotten well over 3.8 million likes, thanks in part to radio personalities posting on their page.

"I had a first grader come up to me and say, 'I saw you on my mom's phone,'" Culp said.

Beyond the Internet popularity, she had a deeper message for her students.

"You need to think about things you're doing before you do it," Culp said.

She tells them what they do now online can affect them later in life. It's a lesson parents "like" about her teaching.
