South Carolina beats Clemson for 5th straight year

COLUMBIA, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

Connor Shaw threw for one touchdown and rushed for another as No. 10 South Carolina won its record fifth straight over No. 6 Clemson with 31-17 victory Saturday night.

The Gamecocks (10-2) won their 18th straight at home, extending a school record set earlier this year. For Shaw, it capped the senior's home career at a perfect 17-0 as a starter in the sweetest way possible.

It was also the first time in more than a 110 years that both teams are in the top 10.

The Tigers (10-2) had never lost five consecutive games to their rival in a series that began in 1896 - which they still lead 65-42-4 all-time. The loss also left record-setting quarterback Tajh Boyd 0-for-4 against the Gamecocks.

South Carolina put things away with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break away from 17-all tie. Mike Davis had a 2-yard scoring run with 11:47 left and Pharoh Cooper threw a 26-yard TD pass to Brandon Wilds.

While Shaw and Davis had strong games, six turnovers for the Tigers led to several South Carolina points and a considerable time of possession.

While the game did not affect conference play for either team, the Gamecocks will not be making the trip to the Southeastern Conference Championship against Auburn after Missouri beat Texas A&M Saturday night.

Saturday's game in Williams Brice may have also been the last game for Gamecocks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, and Tigers wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Both juniors are projected to be top 10 NFL draft picks. Many have Clowney tabbed as the best NFL prospect in college football.

While it's too soon to say if they'll will stay for their senior seasons, most fans are waiting to find out what bowl games both 10-2 teams will play in.
