ASHEVILLE, NC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

A former Upstate Highway patrolman has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for robbing a western North Carolina bank.

Court officials said Robert Owens, of Simpsonville, was also ordered by a judge to pay $50,000 in fines to Macon Bank in Hendersonville and $23,000 to an insurance company.

We're told Owens pleaded guilty last year to robbing the bank at gunpoint back on Feb. 8, 2012.

Owen's attorney said he had a mental breakdown before the robbery. He was at Charter Hospital in Greer when he was arrested six days after the robbery.
